Joseph P. Allen
JOSEPH P. ALLEN has had a varied career as NASA astronaut, mission controller and administrator, physics professor, author and CEO. Most recently, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Veridian Corporation. In the late 80’s and early 90’s he was President/CEO of Space Industries, Inc., a precursor of the Veridian Corporation, traded on the NYSE in the early 2000’s. During his tenure at NASA he served as mission controller (CAPCOM) for Apollo 15, Apollo 17 and Space Shuttle flight #1. He also flew as an astronaut aboard space shuttles “Columbia” and “Discovery”. He served as Assistant Administrator of NASA from 1975-1978.
Dr. Allen holds a B. A. from DePauw University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from Yale University. He is the author of Entering Space: an Astronaut’s Odyssey and has published widely in the fields of physics and space research. He currently serves as: a director of United Space Alliance; a director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute; a trustee of the National Outdoor Leadership School; a trustee of DePauw University; an advisor to the Director of Major Gifts, Yale Graduate School; a trustee of The Potomac School (K through 12) in McLean, Virginia. Among a number of honors awarded over the years, Dr. Allen is a member of the Astronaut Hall of Fame in Cape Kennedy, Florida, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
